Linking Words and Phrases
Practice making longer and clearer answers by using linking words. Follow the instructions in each question to use a specific linking word. Take turns asking and answering. Try to continue the conversation naturally.
Discussion Questions:
Adding Information
- What do you usually do on weekends? Add another activity with also.
- Tell me about your favorite foods. Add an extra food with too.
- Describe your morning routine. Add one more step with in addition.
Contrasting Ideas

- Talk about your town or city: say something good but also something bad.
- Compare studying at home and in a café. Use however or on the other hand.
- Describe someone that you have mixed feelings about. Use although or even though.
- Talk about a product you like. Say why it isn’t perfect with yet.
Cause & Effect
- Talk about your major or hobby. Why did you choose it? Explain with because.
- Talk about a time you were late. End your answer with that’s why.
- Describe a change you made (think about habits, diet, or plans). Explain the result with so or therefore.
- What do you do so that you can relax after school or work?
Giving Examples
- What apps do you use every day? What do you do with them? Give two with for example.
- What do people eat in your country? Use such as to show some examples.
- What clothes are popular now? Talk about some with for instance.
