Past Modals Conversation Questions
These modal phrases help you talk about a past situation and imagine a different action or result:
[subject] + should have + [past participle]
[subject] + could have + [past participle]
[subject] + might have + [past participle]
Use each expression at least once to respond to the situations below.
Example:
- I should have gone to bed earlier.
- I could have set two alarms.
- I might have been on time if I’d gone to bed earlier.
Situations:
- You went to bed at 3am last night, and this morning you slept past your alarm, which made you late for work.
- Deedee studied all night for a test, and while doing the test, she fell asleep and didn't finish.
- Hakim forgot to put his phone on silent and it rang loudly during a meeting.
- You sent an email too fast and realized you attached a photo of yourself instead of the correct file.
- You missed your flight because you left home thirty minutes late.
- You stepped into the road without looking, and a bus just missed you.
- When Harold tried to put his new TV on a TV stand, he dropped it and it cracked.
- You saw an old friend from school, but you didn't say anything because you couldn't remember their name.
